DOGGY DNA TESTING NOW AT BEVERLY OAKS!
Probably the number one question we get, when faced with a newly adopted shelter dog, is "What do you think he is?"
This is a loaded question because the shelter staff have already offered some ideas, so the question is fraught possible pitfalls, especially if we are faced with a Chihuahua-sized; barrel chested, brown dog with a short snub-face and long-haired ears.
"Ummmmmm....Pug-mix? Chihuahua-mix? Mini-Pin. mix? Maybe Chihuahua-Pappillon.."
"Oh, well the shelter staff said he was a Lab Mix."
"Oh, yeah, right, well, he's a little small for most labs....."
So I am happy to announce we can settle that question! When the representative from Mars Veterinary came by the clinic to announce availability of the test, I jumped on it like a duck on a june-bug! This new genetic DNA test can test for 134 of the 157 dog breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club--and the company hopes to have all of the breeds by the end of the year.
Our test is a blood test, which costs $99.95 plus a federal express fee which ensures its arrival and our ability to track the sample. Turnaround time is not fast--it takes 3 to 4 weeks, but then you have it! A portrait of who your pet's parents and grandparents were! Voila!
So what, you might say. Well, a lot of people want to know and that alone is worth the price. But also, there might be breed related health issues that you would want to be aware of. But, at the end of the day, your pet reflects YOU, and your choices and preferences. So, are you a Scottish Deerhound kind of gal, or a Norweigan Lundehund kind of guy?
Maybe you are a cat person, and so, far, it appears you are out of luck. I haven't seen anything about DNA testing for cats, YET. But we here at Beverly Oaks love new technologies for answering questions, so you can be sure it will be here as soon as it is available.
Want to test your dog? Call us at 818-788-2022 or write to info@beverlyoaksvet.com and we will set up an appointment for the sample collection. We'll even play the guessing game with you!
